Spotlight

The American Coot is a waterfowl that is NOT a duck.  Coots are actually members of the rail family.  They are very common in the Midwest and can be seen in many local impoundments.

WBR recently tended to an American Coot. The Coot came in to WBR on 4/24/07 after being caught in chicken wire. The middle digit of the left foot was fractured and nearly severed.

Our initial treatment consisted of antibiotics and supportive care, before we transferred the bird to a local vet who amputated the toe on 4/26. The Coot was returned to WBR for more antibiotics, supportive care, bandage and suture removal.

The Coot was released on 5/8 in Simpson Park, Valley Park, MO - as feisty as a Coot should be!

Bird of the month
The Mourning Dove is one of the first birds to come in to WBR each Spring.  Four baby Mourning Doves have already been nursed back to health at WBR and have been released this Spring.
